Updated: Sep 26, 2025

Thinking about signing up for the Colchester Half Marathon but not sure where to start? You’re not alone! Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned runner who hasn’t yet tackled this distance, the great news is that with the race taking place on Sunday 8th March 2026, there’s plenty of time to prepare.

Now is the perfect moment to start your training journey. Here are some top tips to help you get going:

Taking on a half-marathon can be daunting, but these tips can help!
Taking on a half-marathon can be daunting, but these tips can help!

1. Follow a Training Plan 🗓️

Starting with structure will make your training less daunting and much more effective. There are plenty of half marathon training plans out there and apps like Coopah provide flexible plans to suit your pace and schedule. Following a plan helps you build mileage gradually and avoid injury.

2. Invest in Good Trainers 👟

The right shoes make all the difference. Decent running trainers can help prevent injuries, support your feet and make running far more enjoyable! If you’re not sure what works best for you, many specialist running shops offer gait analysis to help you find the perfect fit, such as Runners World in Stanway.

3. Run with Others 🏃🏽‍♀️🏃‍♂️

As the evenings start to draw in, it can feel harder (and less safe) to run alone. That’s where running with others comes in! Joining a local group makes training more social, keeps you motivated and helps you stay safe. In Colchester, there are fantastic groups for all abilities, such as Running Colchester and the Colchester Harriers athletics club.

4. Try a Parkrun 🌳

If you’re new to running, Parkrun is one of the best ways to build confidence and get used to running with others. Free, friendly 5K events take place every Saturday morning in hundreds of locations across the UK. In Colchester, you’ll find events at Castle Park and Highwoods, giving you the perfect weekly opportunity to practice, track your progress and meet fellow runners. Find out more at parkrun.org.uk.

5. Get the Right Kit 🧢

While you don’t need to spend a fortune, having comfortable kit can make a big difference. Breathable tops, running tights or shorts and reflective gear for darker evenings are worth the investment. If you want to wear something that shows off your Colchester Half pride, don’t forget to check out our official race merchandise.

Final Thoughts 💬

Training for a half marathon is a challenge but one that’s incredibly rewarding. Start now, ease yourself in and remember: consistency matters more than speed. By March, you’ll be ready to take on 13.1 miles with confidence, alongside thousands of others in Colchester’s biggest running event.

So why not take that first step today? Your half marathon journey starts here!
