How to Stay Motivated Through Winter Training ❄️🏃

Training for a spring half marathon means plenty of your miles will be logged during the colder, darker months. While winter running can be a challenge, it can also be incredibly rewarding as you’ll experience crisp mornings, quiet streets and that unbeatable sense of achievement when you’ve braved the elements!

Here are our top tips to help you stay motivated and safe through winter training:

Running in winter can be very different to fair weather running, here are some tips to get you started.
Running in winter can be very different to fair weather running, here are some tips to get you started.

1. Be Seen, Be Safe 🌙

With dark evenings and early mornings, visibility is key. Invest in a running light or head torch, wear reflective or brightly coloured clothing and consider carrying your phone. It’s also a good idea to let someone know your route before you head out.

2. Gear Up for the Weather 🧤

Cold, wet or windy, whatever the forecast it helps to have decent gloves, a hat and a lightweight waterproof layer. After a few miles, you’ll likely warm up but be glad you dressed for comfort and protection.

3. Have a Plan B 🏋️

If the weather really isn’t playing ball, don’t beat yourself up. A treadmill run can be a great alternative, or swap in a strength session. Missing one run won’t set your training back and it’s consistency which counts over the long term.

4. Run with Others 👯

It’s always easier to get out the door when you know someone’s waiting for you. Groups like Running Colchester or clubs such as Colchester Harriers welcome all abilities and can help keep you accountable. If you’re heading out solo, stick to well-lit, familiar routes.

5. Treat Yourself Afterwards ☕

Sometimes the best part of a winter run is what comes after! Whether it’s a hot chocolate, a warm bath, or a cosy evening in, reward yourself for getting those miles done. Small rituals can keep motivation high and make training something to look forward to.

Final Thoughts ❄️
