A girl crosses the colchester half marathon finish line with her arms up with a crowd of runners behind her as she smiles.

Taking place on Sunday 14th March 2027, the Colchester Half Marathon brings thousands of runners together for 13.1 miles through the streets of Colchester. Each year the race boasts an incredible atmosphere, enthusiastic spectators and a fantastic community spirit from start to finish.

But don't just take our word for it. After another brilliant race day back in March, we asked some of the people involved with the Colchester Half Marathon what they loved about being part of it and here are just a few reasons why you should join us on the start line in 2027.

1. It's more than just a race

There are plenty of half marathons to choose from, but the Colchester Half Marathon has something that makes it different: it's a race with a real purpose.

The event is owned and organised by local charity The Robin Cancer Trust. This year over 3,000 runners completed the course and the money raised from the event will help the charity continue reaching young people with vital cancer awareness and education, as well as supporting people and families affected by testicular, ovarian and germ cell cancers.

So whether you're chasing a PB, taking on your first half marathon or simply looking for a brilliant day out with your running friends, every mile has an impact.

2. The atmosphere is something special

Ask any runner what makes a race memorable and they'll probably mention the atmosphere.

From the start line at the JobServe Community Stadium, through the streets of Colchester and out into the surrounding countryside, the route is lined with spectators and supporters cheering runners on. You'll pass some of Colchester's iconic landmarks before heading back towards the finish line and that all-important medal.

And for first-time half marathon runners, having that support can make all the difference.

One of our runners told us:

“It was so fun being a part of such a great cause. For my first half, I absolutely LOVED it! The atmosphere was great and it was so nice to see fellow Robin Cancer Trust charity runners along the route. It definitely helped me during the last few miles.”

If you've ever experienced those final few miles of a half marathon, you'll know exactly what they mean!

3. You'll be part of a real community

The Colchester Half Marathon brings together runners of all abilities, from those taking on their first ever 13.1 miles to experienced runners chasing their next PB.

There's something brilliant about standing on a start line surrounded by thousands of other people who have all trained, sacrificed and worked towards the same goal.

And that community spirit doesn't disappear when the race starts.

Our runners support each other around the course, local spectators come out to cheer, businesses get involved and our incredible volunteer team helps keep everything running smoothly.

One runner summed up their experience perfectly:

“Thank you for putting on such a well organised event, it was a pleasure to be a part of. I'm already buzzing to enter next year!”

We think that's a pretty good reason to come back!

5. The volunteers make the magic happen

Of course, a race this size doesn't happen without an amazing team behind the scenes.

Our volunteers are there from early race day morning, helping with everything from set-up and parking to water stations, marshalling, baggage and the finish line.

They are the people cheering you on when your legs are telling you they've had enough!

And they love being part of race day just as much as the runners do.

One of our new volunteers told us:

“I had the best time and the best spot to cheer people through.”

And one of our regular volunteers said:

“What a great event today!!! More spectators than ever, great atmosphere and the volunteers were awesome!!”

We couldn't agree more.

Whether you're running, volunteering, spectating or supporting someone taking part, everyone has a part to play in making the Colchester Half Marathon what it is.

6. Run for something that matters

One of the best things about the Colchester Half Marathon is knowing that your miles can make a difference long after you've crossed the finish line.

You can run for a charity that's close to your heart, or you can join Team RCT and raise vital funds for The Robin Cancer Trust.

Our RCT charity runners receive free race entry in return for a minimum £150 fundraising target, as well as a free charity running top, fundraising support and plenty of encouragement along the way.

7. It's the perfect Spring challenge

Aiming for a March race gives you a fantastic goal to work towards over the winter, whether you're following a structured training plan, getting back into running or building up from Parkrun.

So, are you in?

Whether you're looking for your first half marathon, chasing a new PB, building towards a bigger running goal or simply want to be part of an amazing community event, the Colchester Half Marathon has something for you.

And with entries for Sunday 14th March 2027 now open, there's no better time to get your place secured and start planning those winter training miles.

13.1 miles. One incredible community. A whole lot of atmosphere. And a race that helps save lives.

We'll see you on the start line. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️
